There are so many different family and cultural traditions you can include in your wedding in new and heartfelt ways. See some of our ideas below:
1. Including a family recipe in the menu
You have have a grandparent or family member who is notoriously known for a special dish that you'd like to honour them as part of the wedding day so include it in the menu - depending what it is. It could be a dish that resonates with both you and your partner, a taste that brings back fond memories and/or holds special significance.
It could even be a cultural celebration of flavours whether it's a dessert, a comforting main course, or a savoury side dish. What a fun and creative way to incorporate family traditions that everyone can enjoy.
2. Something blue and something borrowed tradition
Here's a twist on the above tradition that can involve your wedding guests.
Blue:
- Provide blue ribbons for guests to write well wishes on them and the ribbons can be tied together to create a beautiful keepsake.
- Have a blue signature cocktail for your guests to drink
- (My fav) have blue sparklers for the send-off!
Borrowed:
- Borrow a veil or headpiece for the bride from a family member or dear friend
- Borrowed cufflinks for the groom from a family member or friend also
- Borrowed dance moves - (a tricky one) - ask guests to share their favourite dance moves or teach the couple a special dance.
Old:
- Use a piece of lace from the bride's grandmother's wedding gown to wrap around the bouquet stems.
- Carry a vintage handkerchief in the grooms pocket - if there are no heirlooms then you can create a new one.
- Attach an old, ornate key to the bride's bouquet to symbolise unlocking a new chapter in life while honouring the past
New:
- Sew a customise a wedding dress and groom suit label with initial and wedding date or a special message.
- If you're saying your own vows, create a beautiful booklet that you can read from but also keep and have framed.
- Rather than a wedding guest signing book, have them record a short message to camera.
3. Traditions that could be used in an engagement shoot instead
Japanese tea ceremony - you could set this up as a very special and unique occasion led by a tea ceremony master just for the two of you
Henna ceremony - as the opening image shows, that couple used henna to advertise their save the date announcement. You could also do this as a hen do exercise. 😍
Tree planting ceremony - this symbolizes the growth and foundation of a couple's relationship. It involves planting a tree together, often using soil from each of your childhood homes. To incorporate this eco-friendly tradition, select a tree that thrives in your chosen environment and have a designated spot at your venue. This could also be a tradition you do after you get married when you're in your new home too.
What traditions stood out for you? Do you have any suggestions of something fun and different? What tradition do you have that you're struggling to incorporate into your special day?
